Cal Young

Cal Young is a residential and commercial area in Northeastern Eugene. Cal Young is bordered by the Willamette River and River Road neighborhoods on the west, the Whiteaker and Downtown neighborhoods to the south, and Harlow to the east. The population in the Cal Young neighborhood is over 21,000, which represents about 13% of the population of the Eugene/Springfield area. The Valley River and Oakway Shopping Centers offer a wide variety of shopping and dining experiences. It is only a short drive from downtown Eugene and the University of Oregon Campus. Beltline Road makes trips to other areas, such as Gateway in Springfield and River Road in Eugene, relatively easy. Between the Harlow and Cal Young neighborhoods there are 19 city parks, including Alton Baker Park, Armitage Park and the Sheldon Sports Complex. Alton Baker Park has long been one of the most popular parts of Eugene and hosts many events such as the annual Forth of July Celebration. It is also home to Cuthbert Ampitheatre, a beautiful 4,000 person venue that hosted acts in 2008 such as The Roots and Stephen Marley, Kenny Loggins, Taj Mahal and Melissa Etheridge.

Cal Young is part of the 4j school district and children who live in this area attend Washington, Willagillespie, Gilham and Meadowlark elementary schools, Cal Young Middle School and Sheldon High School. Public transportation is made easy at the River Road and Sheldon bus stations. A bike path runs along the Northern river bank and makes access to parks in this area very easy.
