Eugene is Oregon's 2nd largest city with a population of 154,000 people. Referred to as “ Track Town USA ” the 2008 Olympic Trials were held at the University of Oregon ’s Hayward field. The presence of a major Pac 10 university offers opportunities to become avid, “Duck" fans by watching college football games at Autzen Stadium, and basketball at “Mac” court.
Eugene is considered to be one of the most bike-friendly communities in the nation with 28 miles of off-street paths, and 78 miles of on-street bicycle lanes. The paths wind through community gardens, parks and wetlands.
The average temperature of Eugene is 53 degrees and the average rainfall is 44 inches. The climate and the rich soil of the Willamette valley result in lush gardens and vegetation, and are a delight for enthusiastic gardeners.
Springfield, Oregon's close proximity to Eugene allows it to share all of the amenities of Eugene, as well as having outstanding features of its own. The annual Filbert Festival is a rich historic event that takes place every August in Springfield. The festival features the annual Northwest Harmonica Championships and has activities for all ages. One of Springfield's "best kept secrets," is the outstanding fly fishing for native Rainbow Trout on the McKenzie river. The McKenzie river is world renouned for its beauty and abundant river activities.
